Indigenous Coastal Climate
Adaptation Resource
RESOURCE
The Indigenous Coastal Climate Adaptation Resource provides a comprehensive overview of existing research, tools, and resources that support Indigenous-led and community-driven responses to coastal climate change across Canada.
This report highlights key themes, including climate risks to coastal communities, integrating Indigenous sciences, barriers to implementation, and nature-based and community-led solutions. It also identifies significant gaps—such as the lack of resources in Atlantic Canada, the absence of long-term monitoring, and the underrepresentation of urban Indigenous adaptation—while offering recommendations for stronger cross-government collaboration, expanded toolkits, and long-term adaptation planning.
KEY INFORMATION
This resource combines peer-reviewed studies, government reports, and Indigenous-led publications to help decision-makers, communities, and practitioners better understand the scope of adaptation tools available today and identify areas where new work is urgently needed.
This report was produced for Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) in support of the Climate-Resilient Coastal Communities program. The program supports Canada's National Adaptation Strategy (NAS), a whole-of-society approach, by collaborating with all levels of government, Indigenous organizations, and stakeholders to mobilize knowledge and resources to better understand, assess and develop adaptation actions to reduce climate change risks. NRCan initiated this report to develop an understanding of the scope of Indigenous coastal climate change resources currently available. This report also seeks to identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for tools and resources to support coastal climate change adaptation in Indigenous communities.
